Review:
The subtitle to this drama is rarely mentioned, yet it carries an important clue to the interpretation of this literary piece by Vorosmarty. “From the Time of the Pagan Cumans” does not only place the plot in the 12th century A.D., but it also refers to its mythical roots in the contemporary belief system and world view of those Plains people. Beyond it being a romanticist interpretation of a fairy tale, it is also an account of a young man’s journey into adulthood, and even a metaphor of a shamanic initiation. The young seeker has to enter the spiritual world, find a Grail- in this instance, Love), and then learn to divide himself between those two worlds while attempting to bring the treasures from the beyond back into the earthly realms.
Csongor, the traveler youth, finds the purpose of his wanderings while hiding under and apple tree (a metaphor so often used by ancient myths to describe a visionary experience). He falls desperately in love with beautiful Tunde, who visits the earth from the land of fairies. His consuming passion for her sends him on a seemingly endless quest to find his love. Through experiences like having to arbitrate in a devilish quarrel, facing a three-way junction on the path, receiving a false prediction, having to withstand sinful temptation, and being objected to the character Mirigy’s constant trickery, Csongor’s journey becomes arduous whilst his soul grows ever stronger. At the culmination of the young couple’s love, Csongor has already learnt to overcome his own limitations by leaving his earthly life behind and uniting with his beloved. And while Tunde has also given up immortal life, the power of love bestows its blessing on the two. Csongor and Tunde finally settles in “The Garden of Dawn”- the only place where beings of the two realms can enjoy never-ending happiness together.
