Review:
It is certain that something extraordinary has been born (again) at the Soltis Lajos Theatre in Celldomolk. Josef and Karel Capek’s “A Play of Tragic Love” is truly a rough diamond amongst early 20th century plays. Having been “cut” to stage by director Jozsef Ruszt many times, it is now offered as a chiseled crystal by director Imre Katona. The performance really captures the juxtaposition of the static characters of the commedia dell arte and the birth of individuality underneath their masks. The plot introduces the everyday life of a wandering theatre troupe. The creators of the commedia dell arte characters appear in modernized costumes, standing on a tall podium. All the well-known characters are here: Zerbina, the Doktor, Scaramouche, Brighella, and others; but this special troupe fills its costumes with new life, new colors, and new situations. An exceptional performance by the Solti Lajos Theatre, based on a dream-work of the Capek brothers.
